Funnel Cake

My son had a few friends over and asked if I would make funnel cakes. Actually he has asked for a couple of days now. So today I broke down and made them. With much supervision, by the boys, they turned out delish. This recipe is a sweet batter flavored with a touch of vanilla. The vanilla is optional, I have made them both ways and enjoy them both. (you can also add cinnamon to the batter) We love making these.

Funnel Cakes
makes about six small cakes

1 egg
1/4 tsp. vanilla
2/3 cup milk, I let it pour over becauce I prefer my batter runny
2 1/2 tbsp. vanilla sugar
1 1/4 cup flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder

In a small skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat until hot. Test the temperature by dropping a pinch of flour into the hot oil. If it sizzles right away without smoking, it's perfect. Mix all ingredients in a bowl until smooth.

Using a funnel, drop into hot oil working from center outwards in a web pattern. Cook for about 2-3 minutes, remove from the oil when golden brown and crispy.

Sprinkle generously with powdered sugar and eat it warm. You can add just about anything for toppings, strawberries, chocolate syrup, caramel, and whipped cream. My family and I, like our funnel cake straight–powdered sugar and lots of it!

The boys loved them!

Enjoy!

  4. These look great! I love fairs and carnivals and Disneyland type places, if only for the funnel cakes alone! I just tried making them for the first time, I wish I'd read this post first! I didn't heat my oil hot enough so they turned out in a big lump rather than a nice string-y basket. The recipe looks great, will use it for my second attempt!
